How to Compare Junk Car Buyers and Get a Fair Offer
If a car is badly damaged, incomplete, non-running or no longer worth repairing, a junk-car or scrap-car buyer may be more practical than a private sale. The challenge is comparing offers on the same basis. A high headline number is not useful if it changes when the vehicle is collected.
Give every buyer the same vehicle information
To compare offers fairly, provide the same make, model, year, kilometres, registration status and condition to each buyer. Mention accident damage, mechanical faults, missing parts, missing keys, flat or missing tyres, locked steering and whether the vehicle starts, rolls and steers.
Photos can reduce misunderstandings. Include the exterior, major damage, interior, odometer and any area that may affect the vehicle’s value or collection.
Ask what the quote is based on
Find out whether the offer is subject to inspection and what could change it. A legitimate adjustment may be necessary if the vehicle is materially different from the description, but the conditions should be clear before you book.

Check pickup requirements
A non-running car may need more than a standard tow. Tell the buyer exactly where it is parked and whether access is restricted. Basement clearance, a narrow driveway, soft ground, a blocked-in vehicle or missing wheels can change the collection method.
Our scrap car removal page covers the practical information used to assess scrap and junk vehicle collection.
Confirm ownership and handover requirements
Have photo ID and evidence that you are authorised to sell the vehicle. Raise finance, company ownership, estate matters or another registered operator before collection. Do not wait until pickup day to discover that additional authority is required.
Compare the net outcome
When comparing buyers, look at the complete transaction: the offer, whether pickup is included, any conditions attached to the quote, how quickly collection can realistically be arranged, and what documentation is required. A slightly higher number is not necessarily a better outcome if it depends on assumptions that do not match the vehicle.
Keep a record of what was agreed
Retain the quote or booking details, remove personal belongings and keep appropriate handover records. If the vehicle is registered, make sure you understand any transfer or disposal steps that apply.
